Visual Constancy during Movement. 1. Effects of S's Forward and Backward Movement on Size Constancy.

چکیده
-A novel method for estimating constancy is described, which is applied to the estimation of size constancy during motion of observers moved passively on a swing in darkness. Ss viewed a circle traced on an oscilloscope tube and arranged to shrink as S approached it and to expand as he moved away. The variation in size of the display was adjusted by E until it appeared of constant size to S during his movement. Constancy was greater during forward than backward movement.

Visual Constancy during Movement. 2. Size Constancy Using One or Both Eyes or Proprioceptive Information.
A method for estimating constancy during motion, described in a previous paper, is used to find the effect of proprioceptive information of O's movement on visual size constancy. Os were carried in darkness backward and forward on a swing, while their constancy was estimated. It was found that constancy was improved when Os received proprioceptive information of their movement. Constancy was gr...
متن کاملObserver movement and size constancy.
It is commonly assumed that size constancy-invariance of perceived size of objects as they change retinal size because of changes in distance-depends solely on retinal stimulation and vergence, but on no other action-related signals. Distance to an object can change through displacement of either the observer or the object. The common assumption predicts that the two types of displacement shoul...
متن کاملHuman visuospatial updating after passive translations in three-dimensional space.
To maintain a stable representation of the visual environment as we move, the brain must update the locations of targets in space using extra-retinal signals. Humans can accurately update after intervening active whole-body translations. But can they also update for passive translations (i.e., without efference copy signals of an outgoing motor command)? We asked six head-fixed subjects to reme...
متن کاملThe basis of perceptual constancy and perceptual illusion.
A wide range of perceptual illusions, including many of size, orientation, and movement, can be explained in terms of the mechanisms which normally initiate and maintain perceptual constancy. Perceptual constancy is the relative stability of the apparent value of object properties (size, shape, orientation, movement, etc.) when the representation at the eye (retinal image) is variant with chang...
متن کاملMotor constancy and the upsizing of handwriting.
Although handwriting can vary in size, it remains remarkably similar in form, demonstrating motor constancy (equivalence). A consideration of changes in writing size may indicate: (1) how rescaling is accomplished, and (2) those invariant features that remain constrained under size variation. In the experiment reported here nine participants wrote the word "minimum" (without dotting "i's") in c...
